Fall Happenings in the Arts

St. Augustine Art Association to host Tactile, Member Show Exhibits

by Eric Rakov

October is National Sensory Processing Awareness Month, and the St. Augustine Art Association will be hosting a tactile exhibit with the Florida DeafBlind Association  and sponsored by VyStar Credit Union. Not only is the art fun to look at, but for the blind and visually impaired, it’s engaging and interactive. The artists push the limits of conventional visual art to create sculptures, reliefs, mixed media, ceramics, and fiber art that can be enjoyed and experienced by everyone (hand washing as well as sanitizer will be available and encouraged). Each piece has a Braille sign, made by students from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) to make the art even more accessible. An installation of art done by FSDB students who attend the Blind Ambition Art Club is also on display in the exhibit.

As the summer months come to a close, the St. Augustine Art Association will feature an exciting exhibition season starting with its annual Fall Members Show, on display during the month of October. Local and regional artists have stayed busy these past few months and are thrilled to have new work in the gallery and online. This annual exhibition is a testament to the vibrancy of the local art scene and includes works in a variety of style, medium and subjects. Artists of all skill levels and backgrounds are able to showcase their work in the Fall Members Show and be awarded for their artistic achievements. Pieces will be judged and prizes awarded by our show sponsor, 97Park Residential and Commercial Real Estate. Artwork is for sale and benefits the artists and programs of the St. Augustine Art Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization.

Both the Tactile Show and Fall Members’ Show open at the Art Association, on October 1, during First Friday Art Walk from 5-9pm and will be on display through October 31, 2021. The gallery is open to the public Tues - Friday 1-4pm and located at 22 Marine Street in Historic Downtown. Admission to the gallery is free. Exhibits and additional information is available online at http://www.staaa.org.

Through October 18th
Erika Sobrack:
Suburban Echoes at
Lightner Museum

Lightner Museum presents Ericka Sobrack: Suburban Echoes as the final Lightner Local exhibition of 2021 series. Sobrack’s small-scale landscape paintings focus on domestic scenes of suburban America. Shrouded in darkness, the paintings deconstruct familiar environments, creating dream-like settings that amplify feelings of anticipation, angst, and trepidation. The exhibition runs through October 18. Lightner Museum is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily and tickets are $17 for adults, $14 for seniors and students and $10 ages 12-17, under 11 are free. Lightner Museum, 75 King St., St. Augustine. For more information, visit www.lightnermuseum.org.

Through January 3
From River to Ocean: The 200th Anniversary Photography Exhibition
The 200th Anniversary Photography Exhibition titled “From River to Ocean” will be on display 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday- Friday, through January 3, 2022. Local photographers submitted photography depicting five districts throughout St. Johns County and photos were chosen by a panel to be part of this exhibit. A total of 24 photographers were chosen, with 44 photographs on view in this display. Admission is free. St. Johns County Administration, 500 San Sebastian View, St. Augustine www.facebook.com

October 29 to March 7
Tom Schifanella:
Faces of the Alcazar at the Lightner Museum

A compelling glimpse of life behind-the-scenes at Henry Flagler’s Alcazar Hotel. Through large-format photographs, the exhibition documents fragmentary clippings from early-20th century motion picture magazines pasted to the walls of the Alcazar staff quarters by the immigrant staff who lived and worked at the hotel.

October 29, 2021 – September 30, 2022
Picturing a Nation

A major reinstallation of American paintings and sculpture from the Lightner Museum’s permanent collection. From America’s great vistas and natural wonders, to intimate scenes of St. Augustine, the exhibition presents a vibrant vision of America on a local and national scale through late-19th and early 20th century American art.
