High School Art Show At STAA

St. Augustine Art Association announces return of free exhibit that celebrates high school artists

The St. Augustine Art Association’s 20th Annual St. Johns All-County High School Art Show celebrates the artistic talents of high school students throughout St. Johns County. Presented in partnership with St. Johns County Schools, students from ninth to twelfth grade present their work for display and adjudication. The exhibit will be held at the St. Augustine Art Association, 22 Marine Street in St. Augustine, and online at staaa.org from April 4th through April 27th.

“Each year, our staff and judges are impressed with the emotional and technical maturity we see in emerging young artists,” says Jennifer Flynt, Executive Director of STAAA. “The students are intentional with their work and show incredible diversity and depth in medium and creative application. It also speaks highly of our local art teachers and shows how critical it is to have art in schools.”

The exhibit will showcase over 150 works of art, including 2- and 3-D creations. Last year’s Best of Show was awarded to Tocoi Creek High School 11th grader Sienna Predeek for her painting “New Year, New Me,” created under the teachings of J. Cabrera. The show will include works by students enrolled in art programs throughout the St. Johns County School District. This exhibit celebrates creativity and supports students by fostering an appreciation for art and recognizing the talented youth in the area.

The exhibit is available online at any time and in the gallery from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays. The exhibit opens during St. Augustine’s First Friday Art Walk on Friday, April 4th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Gallery visitors can also enjoy the Miniature Marvels exhibit, which runs concurrently. For more information, visit www.staaa.org, and follow along on Facebook @StAugArtAssoc and Instagram @staugartassoc

St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out

Picture
St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out
April 23 – 27

Artists -  Be inspired by the Spanish architecture, coastal environment, small-town streets, and Old World charm of the nation’s oldest city.

Artists and art lovers! You are invited to the 9th Annual St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out in the nation’s oldest city. This event, a nod to St. Augustine’s art history, celebrates the town’s architectural and coastal beauty through the time-honored tradition of painting en plein air (outdoors). Artists will be painting in and around St. Augustine at notable locations. In addition to watching the artists paint on location, observers can visit the St. Augustine Art Association’s gallery to see (or buy) works-in-progress and finished paintings.

What is Plein Air? Painting en plein air is nothing new. Commonly originated by Great Britain’s John Constable, outdoor painting became fundamental to French Impressionism around the year 1860. The birth of the French term en plein air–literally translated as outdoors–is a more elegant phrase than outdoor painting. Henry Flagler initialized the plein air movement in St. Augustine, bringing in artists from around the country to paint the historic town, and the Art Association harnessed the method in a marketing campaign–Like Painting in Europe! – which helped the organization survive during the Great Depression.
