Why Pet Families Are Seeking
More from their Veterinary Care & Finding it at Pets R Family.

For many families today, pets are no longer simply companions — they are deeply woven into the fabric of everyday life. They share our homes, our routines, our vacations, and often our most meaningful moments. They comfort us during difficult times, celebrate life’s milestones alongside us, and become part of the family in every sense of the word.   And those key impacts leave pawprints on our hearts.

As that bond has grown stronger, expectations surrounding veterinary care have increased and evolved as well.  Today’s pet owners are seeking more than annual vaccines and quick appointments. They are looking for trusted relationships, advanced medical options, personalized communication, convenience, transparency, and a veterinary team that treats their pets like family. In many ways, veterinary medicine is undergoing the same transformation human healthcare experienced years ago — with greater emphasis on preventive care, early detection, collaboration, technology, and individualized treatment plans. At Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital, those changes are something the team sees every day.

Pets Are Living Longer
And Veterinary Medicine
Is Advancing Quickly

One of the biggest reasons expectations have changed is that pets are living longer than ever before. Improvements in nutrition, preventive medicine, dentistry, parasite prevention, diagnostics, and owner education have dramatically increased both lifespan and quality of life for many dogs and cats.  With longer lifespans, however, comes a greater need for more advanced medical care. Conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, cancer, anxiety disorders, and endocrine diseases are now diagnosed and managed far more commonly than they were decades ago. Fortunately, veterinary medicine has advanced rapidly to meet those needs.

Modern veterinary hospitals now have access to sophisticated diagnostics and treatment options that were once only available primarily in specialty referral centers or human medicine. Advanced imaging such as CT scans, improved ultrasound technology, comprehensive laboratory testing, dental radiology, advanced surgical procedures, pain management therapies, and specialized nutritional support have transformed what veterinarians are able to diagnose and treat.

“Many people are surprised by how advanced veterinary medicine has become,” says Kathleen Deckard, DVM, founder of Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital. “We’re able to investigate and manage conditions today that would have been very difficult to diagnose even a few years ago.”
At the same time, pet owners increasingly want access to high-level medicine close to home — without sacrificing personal relationships and compassionate care.

Families Want
Relationships,
Not Transactions

While technology and medicine have advanced significantly, one of the biggest shifts in veterinary care has actually been emotional.  Pet owners today are looking for relationships with their veterinary team. They want communication, trust, consistency, and guidance throughout every stage of their pet’s life — from puppy and kitten visits to senior care and difficult medical decisions.

Veterinary visits are often emotional experiences, particularly when a pet is sick or aging. Families want to feel heard and supported, not rushed through an appointment. As online information has exploded, many pet owners now arrive having spent hours researching symptoms, medications, diseases, and treatment options. While access to information can be helpful, it can also create confusion and anxiety. Increasingly, families are looking for veterinary teams they trust to help guide them through complicated medical decisions with honesty and compassion.

“At the end of the day, we all share the same goal — providing the best possible quality care for the patient in an environment of education for the pet owners,” Dr. Deckard.
One advantage of a larger veterinary team is the ability to collaborate internally on cases. At Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital, doctors frequently consult with one another throughout the day, discussing complicated cases, reviewing diagnostics, and sharing different perspectives and experiences.

This collaborative approach allows clients to benefit not only from the experience of one veterinarian, but from the collective knowledge of an entire medical team. And with a combined over 90 years of experience within our 7 DVM Team, the opportunity to have that powerful knowledge at the ready is second to none!  In modernveterinary medicine, that type of collaboration has become increasingly valuable as medical information and treatment options continue to expand rapidly.

Collaboration and
Continuing Education

Veterinary medicine evolves quickly, and continuing education has become an essential part of modern practice. New medications, technologies, treatment protocols, nutrition research, pain management options, and diagnostic capabilities are constantly emerging.

In addition to ongoing education and training, many progressive veterinary hospitals now work closely with board-certified specialists for consultation, second opinions, treatment recommendations, and guidance on more complicated cases.  Collaboration between primary care veterinarians and specialists helps ensure that pets benefit from both personalized local care and access to the latest advancements in veterinary medicine. “At the end of the day, we all share the same goal — providing the best possible quality care for the patient in an environment of education for the pet owners,” says Dr. Deckard.  For pet families, that collaboration often provides additional reassurance and confidence, especially when navigating complex illnesses or difficult decisions.

Fear-Free and Feline-Friendly Care

Another major evolution in veterinary medicine is a growing focus on reducing stress and anxiety during veterinary visits.  For many pets — especially cats — veterinary appointments can be frightening experiences. Stress not only affects emotional wellbeing but can also impact medical findings such as heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and even laboratory values. Because of this, many hospitals are shifting toward lower-stress handling techniques and more comfort-focused care.

Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital has been recognized as a Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice since opening nearly a decade ago. The hospital emphasizes gentle handling techniques, feline-focused environments, and minimizing fear and anxiety whenever possible.  The hospital is also preparing for the future with plans for the upcoming “Whisker Wing,” a dedicated feline area designed specifically around the unique needs of cats and their owners.  Pet owners increasingly value these efforts because they recognize that veterinary care is not only about medicine — it is also about the overall experience for both pets and families.

“Veterinary medicine is becoming more compassionate, collaborative, and personalized than ever before.”
Preventive Care and Early
Detection Are Becoming Priorities

Another major trend in veterinary medicine is the growing emphasis on prevention and early detection. Many families are becoming more proactive about their pet’s long-term health rather than waiting until obvious illness develops. Routine wellness bloodwork, senior screening programs, dental care, nutritional counseling, weight management, mobility support, and advanced parasite prevention are becoming increasingly common parts of veterinary care.

This proactive approach allows veterinarians to identify problems earlier, often before pets show visible symptoms. Pets are incredibly good at hiding illness, and by the time obvious signs appear, disease may already be advanced. Early detection often creates more treatment options and can significantly improve quality of life and long-term outcomes. Routine screening can uncover kidney disease, liver disease, endocrine disorders, heart disease, and certain cancers before a pet appears outwardly ill. Dental disease, another commonly overlooked issue, can cause chronic pain and inflammation long before owners recognize visible symptoms. As families increasingly view pets as true family members, many are embracing preventive medicine in the same way they approach their own healthcare.

The Growing Role of
Pet Insurance and
Pet Care Financing Options

As veterinary medicine becomes more advanced, pet insurance is also playing a larger role in helping families access care.  In the past, many owners were unfamiliar with pet insurance or assumed it functioned similarly to human health insurance. Today, however, awareness has grown significantly as medical and surgical options continue to expand.

Pet insurance can help families make medical decisions based more on what is best for the pet rather than solely on financial limitations. Coverage can be especially valuable during emergencies, unexpected illnesses, surgeries, cancer treatment, or chronic disease management. Many families are recognizing the importance of being financially prepared before an emergency happens. Insurance often provides greater flexibility and peace of mind during stressful situations when quick medical decisions are necessary. While no insurance policy covers everything, many modern plans can significantly reduce the financial burden associated with unexpected veterinary care. Some companies also offer direct payment options to participating hospitals, helping simplify the reimbursement process for clients.
Additionally, pet health care financing has come to light as an opportunity to support the client in a desire to say “Yes” to the very best pet care, while lightening the immediate burden of payment.  Wonderful options such as Cherry Financing, are available at Veterinary Offices at the point of payment.  Approval is easy and typically obtained in less than a minutes worth of sign up details.  “We have found that payment financing options such as Cherry, offer our clients the option to pay their pets health care bill over time, with a zero or low percentage rate.  Often times it’s much less to use this option than to utilize a credit card for payment.  They real key is that it gives the pet owner the opportunity to say “Yes” to tests and procedures that in the past, their available funds might guide them to a “No”.  That means improved health options for their pets.” Shared Dr. Deckard.

As pets continue to live longer and veterinary medicine advances, many experts believe pet insurance and pet health care financing options will become an increasingly common part of responsible pet ownership.

End-of-Life Care Is Evolving Too

One of the most profound changes in veterinary medicine has been the increased focus on quality of life and compassionate end-of-life care. For many families, pets are deeply bonded companions, and saying goodbye can be one of the most difficult experiences they face. Because of this, veterinary teams are placing greater emphasis on helping families navigate aging, chronic illness, pain management, hospice support, and euthanasia decisions with empathy and dignity.

Advances in pain management, mobility support, arthritis therapies, nutritional care, and chronic disease management are also allowing many pets to maintain a good quality of life longer than ever before.  At the same time, hospitals are increasingly recognizing the importance of the environment surrounding euthanasia and end-of-life visits. Quiet spaces, more private settings, comfort-focused rooms, and allowing families time together have become important parts of compassionate care.

“There is much more focus today on quality of life, comfort, and helping families feel supported during difficult moments,” says Dr. Deckard. “Those experiences matter deeply to people because pets truly are family members.”

For many pet owners, these moments are not viewed as simple appointments, but as deeply personal family experiences. Veterinary teams are increasingly adapting care to reflect that reality.

The Future of Veterinary Care

As veterinary medicine continues to evolve, one thing remains unchanged: the powerful bond between people and their pets. Today’s pet families are seeking veterinary care that reflects how important those relationships truly are — care that combines medical excellence with compassion, communication, accessibility, and trust.  They want advanced medicine, but they also want connection. They want technology, but they also want empathy. They want convenience, but they also want personalized care from people who know both them and their pets.

For many local families, that search begins with finding a veterinary team that feels less like a business and more like an extension of the family itself.  And perhaps that is exactly where the future of veterinary medicine is headed.
